I tried autodialing, and the only replies I ever got were from angry people who asked to be removed from my list or spewed profanity in my direction.
I tried all kinds of different "prospecting" software programs out there, looking for the easy, "push button" profits they all promised.
I even tried email, knowing well ahead of time that it was by far the worst converting method.
You can chalk it up to my lack of experience in the above fields, and I completely agree with you. I probably didn't know what I was doing. However, I did spend a LOT of time learning about each method before I put it into action.
Simply put, while those methods definitely work for many offline marketers out there, they were not newbie-friendly.
I was a newbie. I tried and failed time and time again. I was so desperate for something that works. There just had to be a better way! An easier way...
I set a few crucial criteria for the next prospecting method I was going to try:
It has to be easy – Everything from direct mail to autodialers all have huge learning curves. I need to split test different copy, graphics, envelope styles, voice broadcast messages, time of delivery, call to action... you name it. And frankly I was tired of learning. I wanted to see some real results, if for no other reason than to motivate me to keep going. I was literally on the verge of giving up offline consulting!
It has to bring in cash fast – I wasted months trying out methods that didn't work for me. I was even beginning to doubt the feasibility of it all, quickly becoming impatient and running out of time to convince myself that offline consulting really works. I needed results fast.
The business owner has to want to talk to me – This is important to me because I was sick of being blown off by people who treat me like I'm utter trash.
I have to be comfortable in my own skin – I did not start my own business to do something I didn't want to do, which for a socially awkward person like myself, meant that cold calling and visiting establishments unannounced are at the top of my “Avoid at All Costs” list.
But where was I going to find a prospecting method that met all of those seemingly impossible criteria? A method that seems too good to be true...
Then, out of the blue, I received a mass email from an old acquaintance asking me to attend a BNI meeting as a guest.
At the time I had never even heard of BNI. After a bit of research I learned that it's a networking group for small business owners. A light bulb immediately lit up in my brain. Here is the exact demographic that I need to speak with!
So a week later I attended my first networking meeting. I had no idea what I was doing. I have never been to such an event before, after all. Without knowing what to expect, all I did to prepare for the meeting was print 50 business cards that I created using a basic template I found online. Totally unprofessional, now that I think about it!
I was a bit apprehensive, of course. But nothing like the paralyzing fear I felt when I prepped myself to start cold calling, or walking into some business without being invited...
I landed my first client during this meeting.
Technically, I closed the deal 3 days later when I met with him privately. But he told me that he was basically sold at the meeting where I spent a lot of time talking to him and explaining what I do. Best of all, it felt comfortable, as if I was talking to an old friend.
The contract was only for $500 per month, but I was hooked! I was stunned by how easy and painless the entire process was.
I even made a crucial mistake in this first BNI meeting. Tons of business owners were interested in what I had to say. In fact, I stayed after the meeting for nearly three hours offering suggestions to interested prospects! Yet I never bothered to follow up with any of them.
A week later I attended another BNI meeting as a guest. This time, I was slightly better prepared, but still mostly winging it, and still failed at following up. However, this time...
